2. Chinese food for dinner in Cho Lon. Around District 5 you will find braised duck noodles, dumplings and late-night sweet soups in the Chinese style. Rather than hunting for whatever is trending online, pick whichever place the locals have filled. Eat before 18:30 to avoid the wait.
3. The old quarter and the Chinese assembly halls. Around the lantern street there are several long-standing assembly halls with beautiful hanging lanterns. At night, even looking from outside is worth the walk.
Group 2 — Central District 1: easy to reach, easy to eat
4. The Nguyen Hue walking street. Not as distinctively Mid-Autumn as District 5, but wide, open, and surrounded by places to eat. It suits couples who want an easy evening without weaving through people.
5. The Nguyen Van Binh book street. An idea few people have for a Mid-Autumn evening: quiet, trees, benches. Try the game where you each pick a book for the other within the same budget — good fun, and you both come away with something.
6. A rooftop cafe in District 1 to watch the moon. The fifteenth of the eighth month is the brightest full moon of the year, and watching it from height is far pleasanter than from a packed street. Book a table, or arrive around 18:00.
Group 3 — Riverside and water: cooler, more open, less claustrophobic
7. Bach Dang Wharf. A breeze off the river, an open view, and — most importantly — a line of sight to the rising moon that isn't blocked by tower blocks. A good place to sit for a long time without spending much.
8. Ba Son and Mong bridges in the evening. Two bridges giving two completely different photographs: one modern, one old. Walking across Mong bridge and looping round to Bach Dang Wharf is a short, handsome route.
9. Crescent Lake and the Starlight Bridge, Phu My Hung. If you are in the south of the city there is no need to fight your way into the centre. The area is spacious, the streets are clean, and there is parking and plenty to eat around the lake.
Group 4 — Staying put: for two people who would rather skip the crowds
10. Lay out a small offering table in your room. A mooncake cut into quarters, a pot of tea, some fruit. Cake and hot tea alone are enough to conjure the evening. It is also the cheapest option on this list.
11. An evening without phones. It sounds trivial and it is genuinely hard, which is what makes it worth trying. Put the handsets in a drawer for two hours and just talk. Plenty of couples say this is the part they remember.

A few notes so the evening doesn't run out of steam
