What ID do you need to check into a hotel in Vietnam?

Plenty of guests want to know exactly what ID a hotel will ask for before they commit to a booking. This article sets out the answer under current Vietnamese law, and deals plainly with the questions people are often reluctant to put to reception.

Valid ID for check-in

Under Vietnamese law, accommodation providers must register their guests with the local police. To meet that obligation, every guest needs to present one of the following forms of identification at check-in:

• A Vietnamese citizen ID card (CCCD), preferably the chip version.
• A valid passport.
• A driving licence bearing a photograph.

Can two people who aren't married or on the same household registration check in?
