Where to go for a birthday in Saigon: two plans, afternoon to night
It looks like an easy question and it stumps people every year. Not because Saigon is short of places, but because the two of you have been to all the obvious ones. This piece doesn't list a hundred venues — it gives two complete plans, depending on whether they are the sort who likes going out or the sort who likes quiet, with honest costs.
First: which sort are they
This is the decisive question, and plenty of people skip it.
The going-out sort — enjoys atmosphere, likes photographs, likes a crowd. For this person an evening in is a disappointment no matter how carefully you prepared it.
The quiet sort — tired by having to make conversation, prefers few people, likes to settle in one place. For this person, a busy bar ruins the whole evening.
Getting this wrong is the most expensive mistake, because everything after it is misaligned.
Plan A — for the going-out sort
16:30 – 18:00 · A cafe with a view, or by the river. Bach Dang Wharf, Thu Thiem, or a rooftop in District 1. This is the best light of the day and the best time for photographs.
18:00 – 19:30 · Dinner somewhere you booked in advance. Book at least two days ahead, and say it is a birthday — many places will give you a more secluded table.
19:30 – 21:00 · The Nguyen Hue walking street, or an observation deck. Landmark 81 and Bitexco both have one. The city coming on from above photographs well whatever you do.
21:00 onwards · Somewhere private. This is when the gift and the message land — far more private than the middle of a busy restaurant. If you decorated the room earlier in the day, this is the surprise.
Plan B — for the quiet sort
15:00 – 16:30 · Check in and set up. Booking by the hour, you can check in at any point in the day with no surcharge. Put up the balloons, lights and photographs in about 30 minutes.
17:00 – 18:30 · Dinner at your usual place; it needn't be smart. The restaurant you both already go to is usually more comfortable than somewhere unfamiliar.
19:00 – 20:00 · A short walk. Along the Nhieu Loc canal, or just around where you are. No destination needed, only walking side by side.
20:00 onwards · Back to the room, cut the cake, a film or simply talking. There is a smart TV and the lights dim. The advantage over a cinema is being able to pause and talk.

The three properties in the Trung Son residential area (Luxury, Hotel 1, Hotel 2) are in Binh Hung commune, right beside District 7 and about 10 – 15 minutes from District 1.
Choosing a room around what they will like
- If they photograph everything: an artificial starlit ceiling room (T03, 3301, 4002, 1003), the birdcage room 3003, or Cinderella room 1001 with its pumpkin carriage and red-slipper bathtub.
- If they want to unwind: the 33 sqm Couple Bath Room at Hotel 2, with a twin bathtub in the middle of the room; also room 1101 at Luxury and room 602 at Van Phat.
- If they like things smart: Muse or Myth at the Luxury property, the two highest categories in the group.
- If friends are coming by before you are left alone: the 50 sqm APARTMENT at Van Phat has a dining table and its own kitchen. Note that house rules cap a room at two people staying.
- On a moderate budget: Romantic or the 30 sqm Luxury at Hotel 2.

A few details that cut the cost without cutting the quality of the evening:
- Checking in after 22:00 from Sunday to Thursday takes 150,000đ off.
- Hourly charges accumulate but stop at the full-day rate, so staying longer than planned is never more expensive than a day.
- Check in after midnight and you can check out as late as 14:00 — useful if the evening runs long.
Three common mistakes
Too many stops. Three places in one evening reads well on paper, but add the traffic and you are both tired before the main part.
Not booking a table. On a weekend evening in the centre, turning up and asking almost guarantees a wait.
Saving the surprise for the very end, when you are both worn out. If there is a surprise, consider moving it earlier — around 20:00 – 21:00 rather than close to midnight.

Can you bring in a cake and balloons? Yes. House rules only prohibit anything flammable or explosive, anything toxic, and strong-smelling food. Mention it to reception when you book.
